Heavy-Duty Encoders: Solutions for Extreme Environments
In steel mills, mining, cement plants, and offshore applications, standard encoders don't survive. Intense vibrations, thermal shocks, abrasive dust, and saline humidity require encoders specifically designed for extreme conditions.
Harsh Environment Challenges
Vibrations and mechanical shocks: rolling mills and presses generate vibrations up to 20g and shocks up to 100g. Standard bearings fail rapidly.
Extreme temperatures: steel furnaces reach 200Β°C nearby, freezers drop to -40Β°C. Electronic components and seals must withstand continuous thermal cycling.
Dust and contaminants: metal dust, cement, sand, and textile fibers penetrate every crevice. Viton or silicone seals and stainless steel housings are needed.
Humidity and corrosion: food plants with steam washing, offshore platforms with salt spray. Anti-corrosion materials and surface treatments are essential.
Heavy-Duty Encoder Features
- AISI 316L stainless steel housing β corrosion resistance, mechanical robustness
- Reinforced bearings β radial load up to 150 N, axial up to 80 N
- Viton seals β resistance to extreme temperatures and chemicals
- IP67 or higher protection β total hermeticity
- Extended temperature range β from -40Β°C to +100Β°C
- 20g vibration resistance β per IEC 60068-2-6
- 100g shock resistance β per IEC 60068-2-27
- Stainless steel shaft β corrosion resistance
- Use flexible couplings to absorb vibrations and misalignment
- Mount the connector facing downward to prevent condensation buildup
