PROFINET IO: The Siemens Standard for Automation
PROFINET IO is Siemens' industrial Ethernet protocol, the natural evolution of PROFIBUS DP. It is the reference standard for plants using Siemens PLCs (S7-1200, S7-1500, ET200).
Architecture
PROFINET IO uses a three-role architecture:
- IO Controller: the PLC that controls communication (typically S7-1500)
- IO Device: field devices (encoders, remote I/O, drives)
- IO Supervisor: configuration and diagnostic tools (STEP 7 / TIA Portal)
Performance Classes
- RT (Real-Time): cycle time 1-10 ms. Sufficient for most encoder applications.
- IRT (Isochronous Real-Time): cycle time < 1 ms with jitter < 1 ΞΌs. For high-performance motion control. Requires managed PROFINET switches.

When to Choose PROFINET
Plants with Siemens PLCs, where native integration simplifies design and maintenance. If the required cycle time is > 1 ms, PROFINET is the natural choice in the Siemens ecosystem.
